Basics of Macro Counting
What if we told you there is a way to lose weight that doesn’t include cutting out your favorite foods? No more skipping the dessert or passing up a piece of pizza. It may seem too good to be true, but it’s not!
You’ve tried all the diets. You’ve done no carbs and low-fat and only felt deprived and hungry. Counting your macronutrient intake gives you the flexibility to eat all your favorite foods and still lose weight!
Working with a knowledgeable coach who can assist you will help you feel more empowered as you learn the best macros for your body type and goals.
Counting your macros produces a feeling of freedom. It may seem like a complicated concept, but learning the types of macros and how to count them is quite simple. Using a macro counting app like MyFitnessPal or MyMacros can be very useful, and once you figure them out you can better gauge what type of meal is going to get you results!
Let’s dive into it!
Macro Counting Basics
Protein, fat, and carbohydrates are the trifecta when it comes to counting macros. Your unique calculations are based on whether you want to lose weight, gain weight, or maintain your current weight. Using an online calculator can give you a set of numbers based on your age, gender, current weight, activity level, and end goal.
A macro split may look like 40% of your calories coming from protein, 40% coming from carbohydrates, and 20% coming from fat. Depending on how your body responds to the split, you may adjust your percentages to reflect a higher or lower in a category.
Craving Mexican? You can make it fit! Your portions may be smaller, but you can still indulge in your favorite meals.
The flexibility comes from being able to eat any food as long as it does not put you over your macro split for the day.
Using an app to keep track of your meals and their grams of protein, fat, and carbohydrates is a must. You will be able to see throughout the day how many grams of each macronutrient you have left.
Useful Tools
Purchasing a food scale is a useful item to have in your kitchen when counting macros. If you prepare meals at home, you will want to weigh and measure your food for accurate gram numbers to input into your app.
Glass food containers can come in handy to have portioned-out meals. If you love to snack, measure them out ahead of time and keep them in a resealable bag for quick access. Be prepared with ready-to-go meals and snacks!
Freedom with Food
Macro counting teaches you the importance of portion control and ultimately gives you life-long freedom to enjoy the foods you love while still reaching your goals.
Keeping nutrition on track can be difficult, but learning how to count your macros can make it easier. When you realize you can enjoy food and eat what you want in moderation, you will be more apt to reach your goals.
